[voice post]

[The microphone goes on, you can hear a male voice speaking in a calm voice with some British accent.]

Remember, remember the Fifth of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot
I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes 'twas his intent
To blow up the King and the Parliament
Three score barrels of powder below
Poor old England to overthrow

By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match
Holler boys, holler boys, ring bells ring
Holler boys, holler boys, God Save the King!

A penny loaf to feed the Pope
A farthing o'cheese to choke him
A pint of beer to rinse it down
A faggot of sticks to burn him

Burn him in a tub of tar
Burn him like a blazing star
Burn his body from his head
Then we'll say old Pope is dead

Happy Commemoration of the Gunpowder plot -Guy Fawkes day- to everyone.

...They burned him?

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, people burn a puppet in commemoration of Guy Fawkes.
Fawkes was arrested and taken before the privy council where he remained defiant. When asked by one of the Scottish lords what he had intended to do with so much gunpowder, Fawkes answered him, "To blow you Scotch beggars back to your own native mountains"

When they asked for his name Fawkes replied "John Johnson". He was tortured over the next few days. King James directed that the torture be light at first, but more severe if necessary. Sir William Waad, Lieutenant of the Tower of London at this time, supervised the torture and obtained Fawkes's confession. For three or four days Fawkes said nothing, nor divulged the names of his co-conspirators. Only when he found out that they had proclaimed themselves by appearing in arms did he succumb. The torture only revealed the names of those conspirators who were already dead or whose names were known to the authorities. Some had fled to Dunchurch, Warwickshire, where they were killed or captured. On 31 January, Fawkes and a number of others implicated in the conspiracy were tried in Westminster Hall. After being found guilty, they were taken to Old Palace Yard in Westminster and St Paul's Yard, where they were hanged, drawn and quartered.

That's terrible. Why is it a holiday?

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The tradition of Guy Fawkes-related bonfires actually began the very same year as the failed coup. The Plot was foiled in the night between the 4th and 5th of November 1605. Already on the 5th, agitated Londoners who knew little more than that their King had been saved, joyfully lit bonfires in thanksgiving. As years progressed, however, the ritual became more elaborate.

Soon, people began placing effigies onto bonfires, and fireworks were added to the celebrations. Effigies of Guy Fawkes, and sometimes those of the Pope, graced the pyres. Still today, some communities throw dummies of both Guy Fawkes and the Pope on the bonfire (and even those of a contemporary politician or two), although the gesture is seen by most as a quirky tradition, rather than an expression of hostility towards the Pope.

Odd thing for a detective to commemorate, don't you think Haku-baka?

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The British side sometimes wins over the detective's side, Kuroba.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-11-05 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're okay with people committing crimes if it's for a greater cause?

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't said that, didn't I? And the answer is NO.

Do you know any good veterinarian?

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-11-05 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Guy Fawkes. British revolutionary. Not the mastermind behind the Gunpowder Plot, but the one who was sent to carry it out. Committed treason against his country for what he saw as a greater cause. Treason is a crime, isn’t it? You’re contradicting yourself.

No, why?

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just a tradition on england, Kuroba. Don't hurt yourself thinking about it much.

Because I'm going to castrate that cat.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-11-05 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what Guy Fawkes day is. It's called 'giving Hakuba a hard time.'

You're going to castrate ShinRa?

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting name for a celebration.

I'm going to castrate Moriarty.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-11-05 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's rejoice.

What gave you that impression?

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-11-05 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's my favorite holiday!

The fact that he told me?

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
...

Cats don't talk Kuroba. Must be one of the voices on your head.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-11-05 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He didn't talk, he typed it out. I like him better this way.

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a pain, no matter what form he is in.

[personal profile] pandorabox 2008-11-05 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Why am I not surprised?

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Because is Rufus.

[identity profile] peur-la-lune.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Guy Fawkes day all ready- time does fly. I feel I've missed some of the activities though but a toast to the old rebellion.

[identity profile] clockmaster.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You're a British fellow, mister?

[identity profile] peur-la-lune.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
